About Us Crowe Family Farm
Crowe Family Farms harvests organic heritage and standardized non-GMO varieties for the past 5 years in search for taste, meeting requests from “our extended family”, and for nutritional value. We produce vegetables, herbs, and flowers from our seeds started in March and transplanted in May to our fields, all in a sustainable manner. The growing fields are buffered from adjoining corn and/or soybean crops and have drainage swales to eliminate runoff. Areas between fields and the perimeters are grassed.
The varieties planted reflect a balanced menu to include fresh beans (French, yellow wax, burgundy, and green), salads (all heritage varieties including but not limited to; red and green romaine’s, and Butterhead; scallions, and radishes; red, pink, and white), cucumbers (green slicer, lemon, Japanese burpless, and Armenian sweet), peppers (salad, stuffers, and hot), tomatoes (salad, Roma, and cherry in reds and gold varieties), greens (mustard, beet, Swiss chard and kale (multiple varieties), cabbage (Chinese, red, green, and Brussels sprouts), and other odds and ends such as three varieties of summer squash. The herbs we plant include oregano, basil, thyme, chives, rosemary, dill, and summer savory. Garlic is planted in the fall for summer harvest by order only.
Our season is extended with our near 3000 square foot solar heated greenhouse where we plant late season fresh beans, tomatoes, greens, and lettuces. We also provide a harvest package consisting of pickling cucumbers, canning tomatoes, pimentos, and dried beans, as well as winter keeping squashes.
Our poultry and animal manure is kept for one year, turned frequently with organic kitchen scraps to produce compost, before applying to the fields. Our chickens are naturally raised free range heritage duel purpose breeds (Buckeye and Dominique). The raising of chickens restricts visitation to areas of the farm used for growing produce (3+acres).
