Mickley Organic Farms runs 2 operations. My brother Howard and his son Wade certified the family farm located in Plain Grove, Pa in 2001. In 2008 we expanded our operation to New Springfield, Ohio. We are currently farming about 80 acres in Pennsylvania and 30 acres in Ohio. Our primary goal with going organic was to become more focused on land care and becoming sustainable.
On the Pennsylvania farm raise small grains, corn and hay crops along with pork, poultry and eggs, with a secondary focus on vegetable and dairy products. The primary focus on the Ohio farm is vegetables along with supplying Lanterman's Mill with small grains and corn for their flour mill.
I grow a wide range of vegetables, green and yellow beans, dried beans, peas, peppers in a wide variety of colors, including a purple one that is one of the best peppers I've ever had. Several varieties of tomatoes in multiple colors, besides the traditional red slicers like Big boy and Giants are grown and I raise some orange and yellow tomatoes that so sweet you just can't put them down. Along with that are the plum tomatoes and of course the San Marzano for paste tomato.
There are 4 4 different kinds of Cauliflower, Turnips, Beets, Radishes,Broccoli, Eggplant, Cumbers, Squash including traditional yellow and several varieties of winter storage squash. Two types of watermelon along with 2 kinds of Cantaloupe. Parsnips and 4 varieties of Carrots.
I'll also be planting 5 different types of potatoes, French Fingerlings with a creamy, smooth texture with exceptional flavor that lends itself well to salad with thinly-sliced red onions and chunks of crisp cucumbers; Nicola Golden-skinned and golden- fleshed. Eating them was another delight! Home fries with onions, salt, and butter are scrumptious; Caribe, an elegant potato with brilliant dark blue skin. Superb creamy-white flesh makes the fluffiest mashed potatoes; and Red Pontiac. I’ve always liked this potato for mashing, due to its especially good flavor and texture. Dark red smooth skin on oblong to round tubers with white flesh. And of course, Superior the “keeper” or potato that can be stored all winter.
The sweet potato is my favorite, Beauregard. I've had these store up to 7-8 months, The wife even slices them like french fries, Freezes them and deep fires them later. Delicious!
